There has long been interest in being able to track and locate valuable personal items, but locator tags for such purposes really took off commercially with the launch of Tile in 2012. Since then, the company has sold millions of its trackers. Samsung issued its first version, SmartTag, in January 2021, then in April, the same month that Apple launched its AirTag, Samsung launched the SmartTag+. Samsung says the new technology in the Plus model offers a superior tracking service, but for now, anyway, the technology is limited by who can use it.
