Android Circuit: New Galaxy S21 Specs, Three Nokia Surprises, Samsung Loses To Huawei - Forbes

samsung.indah.link

Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes Galaxy S21 leaks, Huawei beating Samsung, OnePlus Nord reviews, Motorola’s One Fusion Plus, three new Nokia handsets, Surface Duo heads to Canada, and CES goes online only…

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

The Surprise Inside The Next Galaxy S

With the Galaxy Note 20 family set to launch during August, attention will be turning towards the flagship Galaxy S21 release in early 2021. And with the first benchmark results already leaked, there’s a surprisingly powerful change planned. Forbes’ Gordon Kelly:

"Thanks to Samsung’s own leaked benchmarks, we know the chipset inside the Galaxy S21 is potentially transformative. Based on Samsung’s own roadmap, this is understood to be a Exynos 1000 made in conjunction with AMD using a custom Radeon GPU. And those benchmarks? Gaming performance delivered up to 2.5x the performance of a Snapdragon 865. That’s a multi-generational improvement and means it not only leaves every rival Android smartphone eating its dust, but every iPhone as well."

Huawei Tops Samsung In Worldwide Sales

Samsung has lost its top spot in the worldwide smartphone market, according to Canalys’ numbers for Q2. Even with its inclusion on the US Entity list and overseas sales dropping by 27 percent, the Chinese-based manufacturers 55.8 million sales was enough for the number one award. From the report:

"It marks the first quarter in nine years that a company other than Samsung or Apple has led the market. Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices, down 5% year on year. But second-placed Samsung shipped 53.7 million smartphones, a 30% fall against Q2 2019.

Huawei is still subject to US government restrictions, which have stifled its business outside of mainland China. Its overseas shipments fell 27% in Q2. But it has grown to dominate its domestic market, boosting its Chinese shipments by 8% in Q2, and it now sells over 70% of its smartphones in mainland China. China has emerged strongest from the coronavirus pandemic, with factories reopened, economic development continuing and tight controls on new outbreaks.”

OnePlus Nord Reviewed

This week saw the OnePlus Nord get the full review treatment from the tech community. Many commented on the aggressive pricing of the mid-range handset, the fast-refreshing screen, and the weaker than expected plastic chassisRon Amadeo’s review covers all the bases:

For a mid-range phone, there really isn't much missing here. You still get NFC, the same in-screen optical fingerprint reader as every other phone, and OnePlus' fantastic 30W quick charging. Compared to a flagship phone, the big list of missing features would be the aforementioned single speaker instead of stereo, no wireless charging, and no official water-resistance rating. OnePlus says the phone still has gaskets to provide some water resistance, but with no official rating it's hard to say how much, like "is this submersible?"

I’ve taken a closer look at the Nord as well, read my full review here. Currently scheduled for a full release in Europe and India (apart from a special 50 handset run), many OnePlus followers have been asking for a US handsets. XDA Developers discusses a SnapDragon 690 powered Nord handset for the North American markets:

“…we suspect they’ll be part of the OnePlus Nord brand. OnePlus has already confirmed that a future Nord-branded device is coming to the U.S. later this year, and it’s likely that future Nord devices will launch in Europe and India, too. If the upcoming device(s) are indeed powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 mobile platform, then they’ll cost even less than the current OnePlus Nord, which currently starts at £379/€399/₹27,999 in the UK/Europe/India.”

More on the next Nord can be read here

Motorola’s Mid-Range Mobile Pitch

Staying with the mid-range market (it’s getting awfully crowded, isn’t it), Motorola’s One Fusion+ brings together a balance of features to create another handset with some big headline features (the quad camera, the 6.55 inch notchless screen, and a powerful processor) while making compromises in other areas (there’s no fast charging, and you have an LCD panel rather than OLED). Tushar Mehta reviews the handset, including the benefits of the huge battery:

"The Motorola One Fusion+ features a massive 5000mAh battery. While the battery is one of the culprits behind the phone’s heaviness, it allows for long-lasting battery life. The massive battery easily powers the phone for two days with basic usage and over a day with demanding tasks including streaming online videos continuously and gaming for hours.

"…The battery life of the Motorola One Fusion+ is incredible. It is in fact on par with the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Note 9S) we reviewed in March earlier this year. What’s better about the Motorola One Fusion+ is that it provides similar battery backup without aggressively killing background apps and activities.”

Three Wise Nokias For Christmas

A triple header of Nokia branded handsets from HMD Global are expected to launch this year.. The ‘mark 3’ variants of the Nokia 6, Nokia 7 and Nokia 9 PureView should be with us by the end of 2020. Nayan Mishra reports:

"Sources indicate that HMD is going ahead with the testing of Nokia 6.3, Nokia 7.3, and Nokia 9.3 prototypes and it is progressing fine. We recently reported about two Nokia 7.3 prototypes in testing and that one of them has 5G support indicating that HMD may be planning to bring 5G to even lower price bracket.”

More details on the handsets at Nokia Power User.

Surface Duo Heads To Canada

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Android-powered Surface Duo has picked up another government certification. It looks like the dual-screened device is heading to Canada. Mayank Parmar reports:

"Microsoft Surface Duo with model number 1930 was recently discovered on the FCC website and it also passed Bluetooth SIG certification… Notably, another variant of the Surface Duo has appeared in Canada-based UL certifications and the model number is “1930r”, which could be for a high-end variant of the device or its locked/unlocked version.”

And Finally…

One of the key technology events in the annual tech calendar is CES. Any other year and the full circus would be booking hotel rooms, halls, and conference spaces in Las Vegas. 2021 is not going to be like any other year. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Consumer Technology Association - who run CES - has made the decision that 2021’s CES will be “All Digital”. From the press release:

"Amid the pandemic and growing global health concerns about the spread of COVID-19, it's just not possible to safely convene tens of thousands of people in Las Vegas in early January 2021 to meet and do business in person," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA.

"Technology helps us all work, learn and connect during the pandemic – and that innovation will also help us reimagine CES 2021 and bring together the tech community in a meaningful way. By shifting to an all-digital platform for 2021, we can deliver a unique experience that helps our exhibitors connect with existing and new audiences”

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip includes the Galaxy Watch Active 2 for free - The Verge

samsung.indah.link

Samsung is hosting a few discounted bundles for some of its current devices at Amazon and Best Buy, one of which includes its Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone and a Galaxy Watch Active 2 44mm smartwatch for $1,380. That’s the normal price for the phone, but the savings come in the form of getting the watch, which costs around $249 right now, for free. Given that there have been very few deals on the unlocked version of the Z Flip, this is a decent value if you were thinking of investing now.

This bundle is also active for the Galaxy S20, and likewise, there’s no price drop below its normal $1,000 price. If you watch our deals coverage regularly, you probably already know that it’s been sold for as low as $800 unlocked. But if you’re in need of a phone right now, at least your purchase comes with a pretty great accessory at no extra cost.

It’s worth noting that Samsung is gearing up for its Unpacked event next week, where we expect to see a bunch of new devices announced. Of course, we expect to see the Galaxy Note 20 unveiled, and based on this official teaser, the Galaxy Fold 2, Samsung’s rumored “beans” earbuds, a new tablet, and a new Galaxy Watch might take the stage. So, if you’d rather save your money today, there could be some great preorder incentives for these devices just around the corner.

Update 11:00AM ET, July 31st: Added details on Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event, where we expect it to announce a slew of new products.

How COVID-19 Is Shifting Job Responsibilities for Samsung Employees- Mobile B2B - Samsung US Newsroom - Samsung Newsroom US

samsung.indah.link

Customers’ values and behaviors have changed during the pandemic. They are both thinking and buying differently than before. And they are seeing products, solutions, and services through a news lens – a lens that is continuing to evolve and likely to have a lasting effect on long-term behavioral trends.

As part of a Q&A series, Samsung employees across business areas share their views on what customers’ new expectations, needs and priorities are; how they plan to meet their evolved demands; and which habits are here to stay.

Seth Brown - Reinventing Roles - COVID 19

Name: Seth Brown [LinkedIn]
Title: Senior Manager, Retail to Business
Location: Plano, Texas
Years with Samsung: 8 months

1. Has your customer’s expectations, behaviors, and priorities evolved in this new environment? If so, how?

In working with U.S. mobile carriers, the feedback I continually receive is “no OEM partners with us like Samsung!” In this new environment, we’ve continued to meet expectations by providing premiere carrier support that goes above and beyond. We’ve done this by being agile and devising strategies for the new retail frontier – from distribution access to digital experience. We’ve also enabled virtual OEM training and sales support due to store closures. And, we’ve switched our focus from sales to service.

Customer Expectations - Reinventing Roles - COVID 19
Getting face time with customers and coworkers is just a click away.

2. How are you responding to meet the changing needs of your customer?

In retail as in business, we strive to show up where and when it matters most for our customers. Our mission is to further transform our carrier relationships from transactional to relational based on their specific needs. As such, we have had to reinvent our retail support.

Because of traffic impacts and changes, we created a COVID-Recovery Webinar series targeting more than 2,000 Verizon indirect agents, underscoring the products, solutions, and resources available to help them capture and convert sales coming in by phone or online. (NOTE: You will continue to see our virtual event presence, including Virtual Experience (V/X) Back to Business sessions, a virtual Unpacked event, device sneak peeks, etc.) These webinars were strengthened by the added connections made by our Field Sales Organization for future joint business planning, sales support/deployment, and funnel-building.

As buying trends and the strength of the economy continued to fluctuate, we activated sales incentives to capture mindshare and reward going the extra mile. Finally, as a limited number of locations opened for critical activities, we provided solutions for their touchless retail environment, digital solutions for training, in-store demo experiences via QR Codes, and additional prioritization via carrier and agent online platforms.

Customer Expectations - Reinventing Roles - COVID 19
Training sessions are now conducted remotely.

3. How are you keeping your customers and colleagues safe while playing a reimagined role in customers’ lives?

We have fast-tracked digital-first customer experiences and prioritized customer and employee safety measures to instill confidence. And with solutions like Samsung Pay, Samsung with MSFT Link to Windows, Samsung with Wireless DeX Solution, Samsung Paperless Business Solutions, Samsung Social Distancing Solutions and Samsung.com Virtual Sales / Support, Samsung is best positioned to meet the various needs of our carrier partners and end-user customers in this ever-evolving sales environment.

Customer Expectations - Reinventing Roles - COVID 19
We might not be in the office, but that doesn’t mean we are short on screens!

4. Which new habits and behaviors do you anticipate will continue in the long run?

I believe the following changes will continue to play out into the future:

  • The continued acceleration of e-commerce: While the shift to digital has been growing over the years, we’re seeing increased e-commerce adoption and expect the demand to continue.
  • The contactless payments push: To reduce repetitious touch of cards/cash and point-of-sale terminals, mobile wallets/digital payments are on the rise and will see added use/integration.
  • The reevaluation of re-commerce: Under increased economic strains, one would have expected that the renting, reselling, and thrifting of pre-owned goods to increase, but infection concerns may outweigh cost savings and environmental benefits for the time being.
  • The reimagined store pickup: As online browsing becomes the new “window shopping,” last-mile logistics, including curbside pickup, drive-thru, and contactless/locker delivery, are now table stakes for retailers.
  • The visualization of e-commerce: Transformational advances in 3D, virtual and augmented reality for visualizing and demoing products, as well as receiving virtual sales and service support, will become a key competitive differentiator.

We have fast-tracked digital-first customer experiences and prioritized customer and employee safety measures to instill confidence.

Seth Brown Senior Manager, Retail to Business

5. Will their new and potentially everlasting behaviors transform the industry’s future?

I remember the significant transitions from 1x days, then from 3G to 4G, and now from 4G to 5G network capabilities, which is radically changing how we live and how businesses operate. The amount and speed of data needed to support virtual living and working experiences that our customers need has only just begun. From accessibility and functionality to productivity, global 5G deployment has been the cornerstone of those remote experiences.

At Samsung, we defy barriers to progress. On July 14th, the company unveiled a whitepaper outlining its vision for 6G – including immersive mobile hologram and digital replica. “Samsung’s vision for 6G is to bring the next hyper-connected experience to every corner of life.”

It’s amazing to be part of a generation and a company that has seen and spurred so much innovation. Typewriters to computers to laptops to tablets. Landlines to mobile devices to smartphones. Dial-up internet access to digital. I hope our customers are excited, because we certainly are – not just looking back at how far we have come in the digital transformation of business, but how far we have yet to go!

Samsung’s second-quarter profit grew 23% year-over-year, thanks to strong chip demand - TechCrunch

samsung.indah.link

Samsung Electronics sounded a cautiously optimistic note in its earnings report today. The company is continuing to deal with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, but its memory business was fortified by demand for DRAM chips as data centers adapted to an increase in remote work and education.

Samsung Electronics will launch new models of its flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy Note and a foldable device, at its online Galaxy Unpacked event on August 5, but will also focus on increasing sales of low to mid-priced phones, which it expects to drive revenue during the rest of the year.

Second-quarter operating profit grew 26% from the previous quarter, and 23% year-over-year, to 8.15 trillion won (about $6.84 billion), due largely to more sales of DRAM chips. Revenue fell 4% from the previous quarter, and 6% year-over-year, to 53 trillion won, while net profit rose 7% to 5.6 trillion won. Samsung said revenue was impacted by lower sales of smartphones and other devices, but some of that was offset by reduced marketing spending and other cost-cutting measures.

The company also acknowledged that it faces intense competition from other smartphone makers. In fact, on the same day that Samsung announced its second-quarter earnings, research firm Canalys released a report that said Huawei shipped more smartphones globally than any other vendor in the second-quarter, despite dealing with American government restrictions, displacing Samsung from the top position for the first time.

On the brighter side, many analysts believe that Samsung, along with TSMC, will benefit from Intel’s recent announcement that it will outsource more semiconductor manufacturing.

Remote services drove demand for DRAM chips

The company’s semiconductor division was helped by demand for DRAM chips from data centers that need to fortify their online infrastructure to support remote workers and online education. PC demand also remained solid because of low-end laptop sales.

But sales of chips for mobile devices remained weak as consumers spent less money because of the pandemic. When they did make purchases, they tended to buy low to mid-end mobile products, which use less-powerful chips.

A “one-off gain” boosted display revenue

Samsung Electronic’s display panel business earnings improved quarter-over-quarter thanks to a “one-off gain” that boosted profits from mobile displays. Samsung did not give details about where the gain came from, but Bloomberg reports it was a compensatory payment of about 1.1 trillion won ($924 million) from Apple after the iPhone maker ordered fewer displays than expected.

But overall demand for displays was lower as COVID-19 hit smartphone sales. Operating losses were offset slightly by purchases of monitors by people working from home.

Samsung Electronics said mobile display demand is expected to recover this year as its biggest clients continue to launch new products, despite continuing uncertainties from the pandemic. It also expects orders for mobile and graphic chips to increase as new smartphones and game consoles are released, and anticipates a “full-fledged rebound in earnings from mobile displays” by the end of the year, due largely to sales of mid to low-end smartphones.

Samsung & Niio Art Unveil Winning Artwork to be Exhibited Globally on The Wall - Samsung US Newsroom - Samsung Newsroom US

samsung.indah.link

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the winner of its open call competition in collaboration with Niio, a premium platform for new media art. The competition was open for entries from January 30 to March 30 under the theme ‘Digital Realism’ to show digital arts moving beyond the limits of artistic expression using the innovative display technology of The Wall. Among 494 artwork submissions from 59 countries, the judging panel consisting of professional art consultants and Samsung representatives revealed the winner as Dev Harlan. The Brooklyn-based artist who specializes in sculpture, installation and digital media was selected for his animation titled: ‘Areo Gardens I – Attraction’.

“It is an honor to be selected by Samsung and Niio for this competition and I appreciate the recognition. With the time, energy and research spent producing these works, it is rewarding to have the opportunity to share them with a global audience on such a unique platform. Samsung’s The Wall technology and Niio’s international network create a fantastic digital showcase for artists across the world. I am proud to be part of that community and excited to see what comes next,” said Dev Harlan.

The winning artwork was created to demonstrate the invisible forces that compel large boulders to collide in a desert garden, which formed part of a series reflecting on the surreal and sublime aspects of natural geology throughout the solar system. Each animated short film depicts a stone sculpture garden set on the surface of Mars, apparently defying the laws of physics. The boulders in this particular piece of art were found on a remote hiking trail in Joshua Tree National Park, while the animation is set in a Martian terrain site near Gale Crater, currently being explored by the NASA Curiosity Rover. Digital elevation data was obtained courtesy of the Martian MRO/HiRise satellite program managed by NASA, JPL and the University of Arizona.

The Wall - Niio Art Competition - Ohad Benit - Roni Azgad

In second place for the open call competition were Ohad Benit and Roni Azgad, Tel-Aviv-based artists who crafted ‘Ho Me’, a short video exploring the relationship between man and machine, between computer manipulations and their creators. This piece of art evokes the feeling of staring and not being able to tear our eyes away from something beautiful and disturbing at the same time, highlighting humans’ dialectical relationship with the technology that enables us to behold such beauty but at times can cause us to lose contact.

The Wall - Niio Art Competition - Alex McLeod

Finally, Alex McLeod, a Toronto-based visual artist who creates work about interconnection, life’s cycles, and empathy through the computer as a medium, claimed third place. His moving image artwork, ‘The Gallery’ allows the viewer to experience an environment that at first appears as an art exhibition; however, the pace and audio cues reveal that there is something else on display.

“We are delighted to announce the winner of our open call competition in collaboration with Niio, showcasing outstanding talent in moving image art,” said Hyesung Ha, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung is committed to visual display in all forms, while also supporting creativity and the arts. This competition demonstrates just that, with these carefully selected winners now set to be displayed on our awe-inspiring LED ‘digital canvas’ screen, The Wall, bringing to life every detail of vivid and vibrant imagery.”

“The winning entry, runners up and every submission we received demonstrate the popularity and high quality of the digital medium in modern art. We are proud to work with Samsung to ensure these works of art are showcased on the world’s most prestigious display, The Wall, to get the attention they deserve,” said Rob Anders, CEO of Niio. “We are excited to see what’s next for the winners and how we can continue to inspire and connect people across the world through meaningful digital art experiences.”

The winning artwork, along with second and third place, will be exhibited at The Wall showcase locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Thailand, and Korea. Each piece of art will be brought to life on Samsung’s The Wall, the highest quality, large modular LED digital art canvas.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Z Fold 2: Release date, features, specs, and everything else we know - ZDNet

samsung.indah.link

Next week, Samsung is holding its latest Unpacked event, where the company is expected to announce five new devices, including the latest installment in the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Fold lineups. In addition to new phones, it's possible we could see a new smartwatch, tablet, wireless earbuds, and who knows what else.

We've been monitoring leaks and rumors for the new devices over the last couple of months, and below is a roundup of what we expect Samsung to announce.

We'll keep updating this post as more information bubbles to the surface.

What will the new Galaxy Note be called?

  • We assume Galaxy Note 20
  • There could also be a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra model

Samsung, like many electronics companies, likes to stick to a naming scheme once it's established. That said, we don't expect Samsung to follow up the Galaxy Note 10 with the Galaxy Note 11. Instead, we believe that Samsung will follow the same naming approach it took with the Galaxy S20 earlier this year, and announce the Galaxy Note 20.

It's unclear how many Galaxy Note 20 models there will be and what exactly the bigger version will be called. Our money is on a Galaxy Note 20 and a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

When will Samsung announce the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2?

  • Samsung is holding a virtual Unpacked event on Aug. 5.

In early July, Samsung announced it will hold a virtual Unpacked event on Aug. 5 at 10am ET. The invite for the event leaves a lot to the imagination but appears to show an S Pen dripping ink into a puddle that splashes it. The meaning? Your guess is as good as mine.

When will you get the Galaxy Note 20 in your hands? Well, Samsung has been announcing new phones, taking preorders, and then releasing them a couple of weeks later. According to XDA TV host and writer Max Weinbach, the current Galaxy Note 20 launch date is Aug. 21.

note-20-evleaks.jpg
Image courtesy of Evan Blass (@evleaks)

What will the Galaxy Note 20 look like?

  • A lot like the Galaxy S20 Ultra
  • The S Pen slot has been moved

Why explain it, when you can watch this leaked hands-on video? Here:

As you can see, the supposed Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is slightly bigger than the Galaxy Note 10 Plus, has the S Pen holder in a new position, and a massive camera bump -- just like the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Prior to the hands-on video, Weinbach posted some renders that Samsung had accidentally published on the Russian version of the company's website.

What about the Galaxy Note 20's specs?

  • A 120Hz QHD display on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
  • Snapdragon 865+ is likely
  • 100x zoom is already a thing of the past
  • Triple-camera setup on both models

Qualcomm just announced the Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile processor, and according to Ice Universe, which has a solid track record of leaking accurate information before it's publicly available, that's exactly what will be used in the Galaxy Note 20 lineup. The slightly upgraded processor adds a 10% boost in CPU and GPU performance, breaking the 3GHz frequency threshold. Like the standard 865 processor, it includes 5G connectivity, which we expect the Galaxy Note 20 line to utilize.

Just this week, the German website WinFuture published what it's claiming to be the full specifications of both the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. According to the report, there will also be a Galaxy Note 20 variant that lacks 5G support.

Finally, Galaxy Note 20 is rumored to have already ditched the 100x zoom feature that launched with the Galaxy S20 Ultra, focusing instead on improving the overall camera experience with a 50x zoom level. WinFuture's report backs up that claim, with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra maxing out at 50x zoom, while the standard Galaxy Note 20 will have 30x.

Outside of a handful of leaks, we don't have any concrete numbers for storage, memory, or even display size. In a couple of now melted tweets, Ross Young claimed the Galaxy Note 20 display would be 6.42 inches, while the Galaxy Note 20 Plus (maybe Ultra?) would be 6.87 inches. SamMobile reported on the content of the tweets when they were first posted earlier this year.

It's a safe bet to say that the Galaxy Note 20 will start with at least 128GB of storage, although WinFuture claims its double that, at 256GB and either 8GB or 12GB of memory, depending on the model.

the Galaxy S20 Ultra will have a 6.9-inch 120Hz display, while the Galaxy Note 20 will come in at 6.7 inches with a 60Hz refresh rate.

As for cameras, WinFuture is reporting the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will have a 108MP main camera, 12MP ultra-wide angle, and a 12MP 5x optical zoom shooter. The standard Galaxy Note 20 will reportedly have a 12MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, and a 64MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom.

How much will Galaxy Note 20 cost?

  • Starting price should be $1,000

Ice Universe has predicted the Galaxy Note 20 will cost $999, while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will be priced at $1,299, and we imagine those estimates are close, if not a little low.

the Galaxy S20 Ultra, for example, starts at $1,399 and received a lot of criticism about being too expensive. Hopefully, Samsung took that feedback and found a way to lower the cost of the high-end Galaxy Note 20 device.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2.

OK, so what about the Galaxy Z Fold 2?

  • The follow up to the first Galaxy Fold is expected soon
  • Current rumors point to Aug. 5 announcement, Sept. launch
  • The name could be the Galaxy Z Fold 2? Maybe?

MySmartPrice has posted renders of what appears the be the Galaxy Z Fold 2, complete with a larger front display and a hole-punch design for the main display.

The Galaxy Fold was a solid first attempt at a phone with a foldable display, well, after the initial issues that delayed its original launch. Samsung successfully launched another foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip, earlier this year, and now it's time for the Galaxy Fold's successor.

According to Ross Young, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be announced alongside the Galaxy Note 20, but won't be available until sometime in September.

Android Authority is reporting that the Galaxy Z Fold 2's external display will measure 6.23 inches, while the internal display will measure 7.59 inches with a 120Hz refresh rate, just like the Galaxy Note 20 line.

Outside of the limited leaks and rumors, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will likely have 5G and perhaps an S Pen for the first time, adding to its productivity-focused feature set.

We'll know a lot more about Samsung's latest smartphone releases in just a few weeks, but until then, we'll keep watching for more reports, leaks, and rumors.

Are you looking forward to either device? If so, which one and why? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung will soon launch its most exciting Galaxy smartphone of the year. But you might want to skip it after reading this.

In a new exclusive, the always-excellent SamMobile has revealed the first details about Samsung’s Galaxy S20 successors (dubbed Galaxy S21/S30) and YouTuber Mauri QHD has flagged what we already know will be their game-changing upgrade

07/29 Update: Mauri QHD has revealed a further Galaxy S21 upgrade compared to both the Galaxy S20 and upcoming Note 20: a leap in build quality. The YouTuber says Samsung has decided to ditch the controversial 'glasstic' (glass and plastic) hybrid chassis used on the entry-level Galaxy S and Note models with the S21. These finishes have been considered cheap by many and an overly aggressive cost cutting exercise, given the prices of these handsets are still close to $1,000. One word of warning: Mauri says this is Samsung's thinking "atm", so it is subject to change if pressure on margins increases.

07/30 Update: Further Galaxy S21 news has broken via popular Samsung site SamMobile, which claims the next-gen flagship will have a greatly improved front facing camera. SamMobile states that this will be achieved by increasing the size of the sensor as well as adding optical image stabilisation. Two sensors are being considered: a 1/2-inch 48MP sensor and 1/2.55-inch 12MP sensor, both larger than anything Samsung has used before on the front of its phones. That said, it is the inclusion of OIS which could be of most benefit, given selfies are usually taken at arm's length with considerably more shake than a standard rear camera photograph. For selfie fans, this could make the Galaxy S21 series your go to smartphone.

Breaking things down, SamMobile says most of what they learned about the Galaxy S21 range will come as no surprise: three models, just like the Galaxy S10 and S20 lineups before it, 5G across the board (with some regional 4G-only options) and 128/256GB storage options as standard. So far so standard, but here’s the head turner: what drives them.

Thanks to Samsung’s own leaked benchmarks, we know the chipset inside the Galaxy S21 is potentially transformative. Based on Samsung’s own roadmap, this is understood to be a Exynos 1000 made in conjunction with AMD using a custom Radeon GPU. And those benchmarks? Gaming performance delivered up to 2.5x the performance of a Snapdragon 865. That’s a multi-generational improvement and means it not only leaves every rival Android smartphone eating its dust, but every iPhone as well.

Of course, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will launch in just a few weeks and it is no slouch coming with a Snapdragon 865+, a tweaked version of the 865. It also has an industry-first LPTO display and some essential camera changes. That said, it looks set to be priced close to $1,400 while the $1,000 entry-level Note 20 looks like a dumpster fire you should avoid.

Yes, I expect the Galaxy S21 range will also be expensive but, if you can only afford a Note 20 at this point in time, my advice would be to wait for the S21’s arrival in February. If Samsung’s final product can live up to its early benchmarks, then you will be glad you did.

Samsung’s profits are up despite COVID-19 pandemic - The Verge

samsung.indah.link

Samsung posted better than expected earnings for the second quarter of 2020, with operating profit up 23 percent year-on-year to 8.15 trillion won ($6.84 billion) despite a 6-percent fall in revenue. The Korean conglomerate says it experienced a greater recovery from the impact of COVID-19 than it had initially forecast and managed to optimize its expenditure, even though sales of devices like smartphones were down from last year.

Samsung expects smartphone sales to rise next quarter due to the launch of the Galaxy Note 20 and an unnamed foldable phone, likely the leaked Galaxy Z Fold 2. Its display business, which supplies panels for other device makers, saw demand fall but had earnings boosted due to a “one-time gain.” This is understood to be a compensatory payment from Apple after the US company ordered fewer iPhone panels than expected; Bloomberg notes that analysts peg the amount at about 1.1 trillion won ($924 million).

Samsung’s all-important chip business is seeing mixed results during the pandemic. The shift to working from home means demand is strong for DRAM used in data centers and PCs, but down in mobile devices. It’s a similar story with NAND, where server SSD sales are growing as cloud usage rises, but slumping smartphone sales mean overall storage shipments are down. Still, the semiconductor division overall accounted for two-thirds of Samsung’s operating profit for the quarter.
