Samsung Galaxy A52 5G: Can just ‘good’ be good enough? - Yahoo Tech

samsung.indah.link

We get pretty worked up when a new, premium smartphone shows up. And I’d be lying if I said playing with expensive hardware wasn’t one of the best parts of this job. It’s especially nice because, more often than not, the last thing I want to do is pay for some of the things we test.

Which brings me to an important question: how much should anyone actually shell out for a new smartphone? The short answer is “as much as you’re comfortable with.” Thankfully, companies are working to make their more affordable devices flashier than ever. Case in point: I’ve spent a few days with Samsung’s new A52 5G, and while it might not satisfy those with flagship tastes, it gets pretty close sometimes.

You’d expect a $500 smartphone to be rife with compromises, and you’d be right. While Samsung’s cringe-worthy launch event showed off the A52 5G in a handful of “awesome” hues, only the plain black model is coming to the US, and its mostly plastic body doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence. Granted, it packs a polished aluminum frame and it’s rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, but that matte black finish picks up fingerprints like no one’s business. And I’ve already put a few distracting nicks into its cover glass. There’s no wireless charging here either, and the pack-in power adapter is limited to charging speeds of 15W. That’s not bad, but you’re in for a wait when you plug this thing into the wall.

But in other ways, the A52 5G manages to punch above its weight. For one, it has a proper headphone jack, a feature all but extinct in more expensive models. The clearest example here, though, is Samsung’s choice of screen: a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED panel running at 1080x2400. Beyond the immediate benefits a big screen offers, it was generally bright enough to be visible under the harsh Oakland sun. That said, this screen is super-reflective, so some people will have trouble seeing it well regardless of brightness.

Like some of Samsung’s more expensive displays, it features a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz for ultra-smooth action on screen. That said, it doesn’t pack the same clever on-the-fly refresh rate switching you’ll find in devices like the Galaxy S21 series. It’s set to the full 120Hz out of the box, but you can manually dial it down to a more commonplace 60Hz for improved battery life. Oh, and there’s not much to worry about if you’re wary of big cut-outs for front-facing cameras either; the hole Samsung used to accommodate its 32-megapixel sensor is pleasantly tiny.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G hands-on
Samsung Galaxy A52 5G hands-on

Speaking of cameras, the A52 also has a flexible quad-sensor array sitting high on its back. You’ll probably spend most of your time with the 64-megapixel main sensor which, in typical Samsung fashion, produces vivid, eye-catching 16-megapixel stills when shooting in bright conditions. (If you really wanted to, you could shoot 4:3 photos at 32-megapixels but it’s usually not worth it unless you plan to tweak the image in post and print it out.) Thankfully, low-light performance has been surprisingly solid too, and Samsung’s Night mode generally does a good job combating noise.

Now, I didn’t have my full complement of comparison devices to test the A52’s, and that’s partially why I don’t consider this a full-fledged review. Still, considering its mid-range ambitions, the A52’s primary sensor hasn’t left me wanting. Of course, a lot of that boils down to personal preference.

Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate Samsung’s aggressive approach to colors, and as usual, the A52’s photos are punchier and more contrasty than real life. Photographers who’d prefer a more neutral approach may walk away disappointed, but I suspect most people shopping for phones on a budget won’t mind too much.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G hands-on

That said, there are still a few other cameras we need to talk about. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide does a commendable job capturing more expansive scenes, but the sensor’s limited resolution means you probably won’t find much in the way of fine detail. It’s especially bad in low-light. Samsung’s image processing expertise couldn’t prevent noise from creeping into images shot at night.

Rounding out the package is a solid 5-megapixel macro camera for shooting exceptionally close images (though, I don’t know anyone who uses features like this regularly) and a 5-megapixel sensor for capturing depth data. You can’t shoot directly with that depth camera; instead, Samsung uses it to better isolate people from the background for portrait photos. It also plays an important role in the camera’s “Fun” mode, which you can use to paint people in photos with layers of virtual makeup and accessories. All of the Snapchat-developer filters I’ve tried so far do exactly what they promise, but let’s be real — this feature is clearly for the young and young-at-heart. (Unfortunately, I am neither.)

Samsung Galaxy A52 main camera sample
Samsung Galaxy A52 main camera sample

Ultimately, none of this would matter if the A52 ran like a dog, but Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 750G chipset does a respectable job keeping everything running at a solid clip. That said, I suspect the 6GB of RAM Samsung went with here holds things back a bit. Jumping between apps and minimizing YouTube videos is sometimes interrupted by noticeable lag. On the whole, though, the A52 has been more than competent at keeping up with my frenzied Slacking and prolonged periods of playing Lichtspeer poorly.

With that in mind, Samsung’s software continues to be a source of confusion. I don’t mean that One UI is difficult to wrap your head around — it isn’t. Really, it’s the little things that continue to feel unpleasant and weird. No one wants ads in their stock weather app, for instance, but Samsung shoves them in there anyway. And while using the A52’s big screen to its fullest all but demands gesture navigation, it isn’t on by default — you’ll have to jump into the phone’s settings to switch away from Samsung’s classic (and arguably dated) three-button navigation scheme.

Normally, this is where I’d moan about Samsung’s lackluster long-term software support, but at least that is changing. The company confirmed earlier this month that, like its portfolio of premium phones, the A52 5G will get three years of full Android updates — that means this Android 11 phone should get the Android 14 update. Well, eventually anyway. (Compared to other smartphone makers, Samsung is still pretty slow at producing those updates and getting them certified and distributed.)

Now, because I’ve only had the A52 for a few days, there are some things I haven’t been able to test as thoroughly as I’d like. For one, the phone’s 4,500mAh battery has been more than enough to get through full working days — even with the screen’s refresh rate set to its full 120Hz — but I’m waiting to get a better sense of how far I can push the phone before it conks out. And if I’m honest, testing 5G in the Bay Area hasn’t been great either. This is a purely sub-6 5G device, which isn’t unusual for phones in this price range, but more than a few times I struggled to find a 5G signal outside San Francisco proper.

Ultimately, how impressive the A52 5G really is kind of depends on what you’re comparing it against. Apple’s answer to these kinds of high-powered, low-cost Android phones is the 2020 iPhone SE, which pairs a design straight out of 2016 with one of the company’s most powerful mobile chipsets, the A13 Bionic. What the iPhone SE lacks in style it makes up for with nearly flagship-grade performance that the A52 5G simply can’t match. Then again, it’s hard to argue with Samsung’s big, excellent screen and the bevy of cameras around back. It’s a very flexible package for the price, and worthy of serious consideration if you’re of the Android persuasion.

And of course, there’s our favorite inexpensive Android phone of the moment, Google’s $350 Pixel 4a. It too is quite a bit smaller than the A52 5G, but its pair of rear cameras still shines thanks to Google’s well-honed computational photography chops. If it were me, I’d personally stick with a Pixel because of its remarkably clean software, but there’s still a lot to like in Samsung’s maximal approach to its One UI interface.

Samsung Galaxy A52
Samsung Galaxy A52

So, based on these first impressions, would I actually buy an A52 5G? Honestly, probably not — and that’s all because of Samsung. I really enjoyed last year’s S20 Fan Edition, with its high-powered Snapdragon 865 chipset and a camera setup copied almost directly from the rest of the S20 lineup. The A52 would be a whole lot more tantalizing if deals on that higher-performance device were hard to come by, but they’re not. As I write this, the comparable unlocked S20 FE sells for just $100 more than the A52 on Amazon, and you could score even more significant savings if you had an old phone you don’t mind trading in. Like I mentioned much earlier, it's worth buying the best phone you can comfortably afford, and in this case the S20 FE's extra performance is almost certainly worth the splurge.

All told, the A52 is one of Samsung’s strongest mid-range options to date, and is certainly worthy of your attention if you still shudder at the idea of dropping four figures on a phone. If you're fairly sure this phone is going to be your next purchase, just remember that time is your friend — the A52 is a solid value buy now, but that deal will only get sweeter over time.

You can get Apple’s AirTag for Samsung smartphones in the Galaxy SmartTag+, available now - 9to5Google

samsung.indah.link

Apple’s AirTag launched today and is dominating news cycles, but it’s a device that only has the most limited possible functionality with Android phones. Here’s the good news, though. If you have a Samsung smartphone, you can get your own version of the AirTag in the Galaxy SmartTag+.

Available today for $39.99, the Galaxy SmartTag+ is Samsung’s take on a Bluetooth and UWB tracker. The affordable little device pairs with your Samsung smartphone and can be tracked using Bluetooth, but also using UWB on compatible Galaxy smartphones such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy Z Fold 2. That tech provides more accurate, directional results on finding your tracker and its attached items compared to the Bluetooth-only $29 Galaxy SmartTag.

Functionally, Galaxy SmartTag+ is essentially identical to what Apple is offering AirTag users, just for those with a Samsung smartphone. It even employs the same basic functionality for notifying users if a tag that they don’t own is on their person. That’s something that’s been pointed to on the AirTag as a potential safety concern (for good reason, too).

You can purchase Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+ for $39 from Samsung.com or Amazon, and the Bluetooth-only SmartTag is available at the same storefronts for $29.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE release date looks imminent after this Samsung leak - Tom's Guide

samsung.indah.link

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE's launch might be imminent. The rumored follow-up to the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE just leaked on one of Samsung's own websites.

As spotted by GalaxyClub, an advertisement for the Galaxy S21 FE can be seen when you hover over the mobile tab on Samsung Mexico's website. Sure enough, when we tried finding the promo ourselves, we saw a banner reading 'conoce más sobre Galaxy S21 FE' — learn more about Galaxy S21 FE.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

Except when we clicked the link, it lead us to the shopping page for the standard Samsung Galaxy S21 lineup, which debuted earlier this year with the baseline model, Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The advertisement's accompanying image also looks identical the existing S21 phones, so we're inclined to believe it doesn't match the call-to-action. We can't be sure, though.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is primed to become the best Samsung phone for people who wanted the standard Galaxy S21, but felt deterred by the price. The S20 FE made many of the key features of the S20 series more affordable, and we expect the S21 FE to do the same for the S21 phones.

But last year, the S20 FE with 5G started at $699. Since the Galaxy S21 lineup is less expensive than the Samsung Galaxy S20 series was when it first arrived, the S21 FE could start at a comparatively lower price.

Other recent leaks have made it seem the Galaxy S21 FE is arriving soon. Unofficial renders of the mid-range phone leaked earlier this month, showing off a smartphone that looks similar to the Galaxy S21, as expected. The renders revealed the same central pinhole selfie camera, as well as the traffic light-style triple camera array.

Still, there's no official Samsung Galaxy S21 FE release date yet. In March, trusted leaker Evan Blass shared a roadmap for Samsung's product rollouts  through August of 2021, with the S21 FE sitting at the end of the alleged schedule. Could this mean it'll launch at Samsung's annual summer Unpacked keynote alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

While it's certainly possible, this would deviate from Samsung's past release schedule. It unveiled the Galaxy S20 FE in September.

Intel, Samsung and the move to purposeful computing - CNET

samsung.indah.link
samsung-laptops-00-03-09-16-still002.png

Samsung's Galaxy Book Pro was co-engineered with Intel to deliver a new, unified Galaxy experience.

The pandemic created a huge shift in how -- and where -- a lot of people work and learn. It also accelerated demand for new technology to get things done. The PC market boomed last year in response, with worldwide PC shipments totaling 91.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2020 alone, according to research firm IDC.

"The PC is essential, whether that's people working from home or learning from home, it's how they communicate with their friends and family, how they collaborate," Gregory Bryant, EVP of the Client Computing Group at Intel, told CNET in a recent video chat. PCs aren't just personal computers now, but a key instrument for enabling people to achieve what matters most to them, what Bryant calls "purposeful computing."

"People have multiple roles during the day," Bryant says. "Sometimes during the day I'm a dad, sometimes during the day I'm a musician, I play the drums. Sometimes during the day, I'm a professional -- it's not a one-size-fits-all thing and during the day a person can play multiple roles, so how do we build purpose-built systems that are optimized for that experience?"

This question is at the heart of what was Intel's Project Athena program and has morphed into the chip-maker's Evo platform. An Evo-verified laptop must meet certain standards for performance, battery life, wireless and wired connections and responsiveness among other things. These standards were designed to meet key experience indicators or KEI that Intel developed after studying PC users and their needs to help them handle their multiple roles throughout the day.

Samsung starts a new Evo chapter

embargoed-to-april-28-2021-10am-et-intel-samsung

Gregory Bryant, EVP of the Client Computing Group at Intel, with the Galaxy Book Pro 360.

Intel

When Intel started Project Athena, the target user was "the mobile go-getter," and each of the current 75 Evo-verified PCs is co-engineered with Intel to deliver a top mobile experience. However, two of the newest additions, Samsung's Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360, are the first to push the spec further. The premium PCs are built to bring together the strengths of Intel's PC ecosystem and Samsung's mobile ecosystem to create centerpiece PCs for "mobile-first consumers."

Read more: Samsung Galaxy Book Pro, Pro 360 laptops promise the best Galaxy experience starting at $999

"These are consumers used to being always connected on their phone. And so they want to also be always connected on their PC, and they want all of their devices to sync and work seamlessly together," says Danielle Moten, senior product manager for Samsung. The idea is to have fluidity between devices so you can start something on your phone and continue it on a laptop.

Intel and Samsung spent the last couple of years working together to make this happen, along with help from Microsoft on the software side. For example, the laptops have a custom Bluetooth enablement that allows Galaxy Buds to instantly connect without the process of going into settings and selecting them. With your Galaxy phone, you can connect to the laptop and drag and drop files and content between the two near-instantly. You can also use a Galaxy Tab tablet as a second extended (or mirrored) display and use the laptops to control your SmartThings smart home devices as well as use it to locate your other Galaxy devices.

The end result is seemingly a unified experience with all the devices in Samsung's Galaxy ecosystem. This kind of deep integration between products is something that typically gets attributed to only one company: Apple.

Despite AMD nipping at Intel's heels with its latest mobile chips and Apple cutting ties with the company in favor of its own processors, Bryant is confident Intel still has the advantage.

"The strength of Intel and the client computing group is our ability to not just deliver the CPU, but a variety of the system components and then work with third parties to do the deep platform engineering with our customers. It's what we bring to the table and it's really differentiated us."

Samsung overtakes Apple in global smartphone shipments in first quarter, report finds - CNET

100-samsung-galaxy-s21-and-s21-ultra-comparison
Sarah Tew/CNET

Samsung's decision to slash prices of its flagship Galaxy S21 lineup by a cool $200 appears to be paying off.

The South Korean manufacturer overtook Apple in worldwide smartphone shipments in the first quarter of this year, according to a Thursday report published by research firm Canalys, shipping 76.5 million units to grab 22% of market share. Samsung also reported a strong set of first quarter earnings today bolstered by mobile division on the back of strong sales of the Galaxy S21 lineup.

By comparison, Apple shipped 52.4 million iPhones to capture 15% market share from the January to March quarter of this year.

The iPhone 12 Mini has sold "below expectations, but strength in other iPhone 12 models, as well as stronger demand for the older iPhone 11, helped it maintain strong momentum," the Canalys report said.

Despite lower shipments than Samsung, Apple's still pulling in more revenue than its South Korean rival, at least according to a report published this week by Counterpoint Research. In addition, Apple reported a stellar set of quarterly earnings bolstered by a 65% jump in iPhone sales.

Not far behind is China's Xiaomi, which shipped 49 million units to capture 14% of market share, according to the Canalys report. Fast-growing Chinese brands Oppo and Vivo rounded out the top five, shipping 37.6 million and 36 million units respectively, with sanction-riddled Huawei dropping down to seventh place.

Overall, the global smartphone industry has grown compared to last year to reach 347 million units shipped in the first quarter of this year, growing by 27% according to Canalys.

Preorder The New Samsung Galaxy Book Pro Today For Up To $150 In Freebies - Forbes

samsung.indah.link

Hot on the heels of Apple's Spring Loaded event—which saw the unveiling of a new iPad Pro and iMac, among other gadgets—Samsung held its own product launch called Galaxy Unpacked on Wednesday, April 28. There was much speculation about what the mobile brand had up its sleeve, and the answer turned out to be, just as we had guessed, some fresh Galaxy Book laptops.

You’d be forgiven for barely even being aware of the fact that Samsung has a line of Galaxy laptops—they’re not as popular as some of Samsung’s other Galaxy mobile devices—but with this year’s release, it looks like Samsung might be trying to change that. The new Galaxy Books look likely to turn some heads.

forbes.comSamsung Promo Codes | 15% Off In April 2021 | Forbes

Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360

Though there were four models announced at the event, the hottest news centers on the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360. These laptops will run the latest 11th generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and the Iris Xe graphics chipset. As for wireless, Samsung has tried to future-proof the laptops with Wi-Fi 6E, though it may be some time before you encounter a Wi-Fi 6E router to take advantage of the performance. They’re also LTE-compatible for operation independent of Wi-Fi entirely.

Galaxy Book Pro

The Galaxy Book Pro is a traditional clamshell laptop, available in both 13.3-inch and 15.6 inch sizes and will offer AMOLED full-HD displays. Samsung says that it’ll use smart color tuning to calibrate the display to your environment, and AKG speakers will offer Dolby Atmos surround sound audio. For web conferencing, the 720p webcam is complemented by noise-cancelling microphones.

Galaxy Book Pro 360

The Galaxy Book Pro 360 is a 2-in-1 convertible that you can use as a laptop or flip around into a tablet. Both of these new laptops carry Intel’s Evo label, which means they meet a slew of heightened performance requirements. You can expect as much as 16 hours of battery life, an 8-hour quick charge in 30 minutes, and the ability to wake from sleep in less than a second.

But what sets these laptops apart is the effort that Samsung appears to have put into making them a seamless part of the Galaxy family and following thorough on a “mobile first” strategy. A new Airdrop-like feature called Quick Share lets you instantly transfer images and files between the Galaxy Book and other Galaxy devices almost as seamlessly as Jack Bauer used to ask Chloe to “send it to my screen” on the TV show 24. And the laptops will automatically pair with Galaxy Buds without needing to select them.

Preordering the Galaxy Book Pro or Pro 360

The Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 will be available for purchase beginning May 14. But you can preorder the Galaxy Book Pro right now—the 13-inch screen starts at $1,000, and the 15.6-inch version starts at $1,100.

The Galaxy Book Pro 360 is also available for preorder now. The 13-inch starts at $1,200, and the Galaxy Book Pro 360 with a 15.6-inch screen starts at $1,300.

Samsung is dangling some incentives for preordering by May 13. If you order through Amazon, Samsung will give you a $150 credit; a pre-order at Best Buy will net you a $150 gift certificate; and if you preorder directly from Samsung, you get either a $150 eCertificate or free Galaxy Buds Pro.

And if you actually buy a Galaxy Book Pro between May 14 and May 30, you’re eligible for $100 in credit through Amazon, Best Buy or Samsung (depending upon where you bought it).

Also Coming: Samsung Galaxy Book and Galaxy Book Flex2 α

Samsung had a lot to talk about at Galaxy Unpacked, including two other laptops which will be coming soon as well. The Samsung Galaxy Book, as the name suggests, is the baseline model in the updated family, offering many of the same enhancements, like an 11th generation Intel Core CPU, all-day battery life and deep integration with the Galaxy family at a more modest price. The Galaxy Book will be available in the second half of 2021 with a price estimated to start around $800.

Similarly, Samsung announced the Galaxy Book Flex2 α—an ultra-slim 2-in-1 convertible with a QLED display. It, too, will sport an 11th Gen Intel Core processor, all-day battery and connectivity with the rest of the Galaxy family. It’s expected to be available for preorder soon with availability on May 14, but we don’t yet have details on how to preorder or purchase it.

The update should be pushed to your phone automatically, but if you’re impatient you can check manually by selecting Software Update from the settings menu.

Samsung provides no details on what camera improvements have been made, but recent independent performance results can help us make a good guess.

Dxomark’s camera benchmarks  (tested prior to the update) reveal software-related camera issues, including inconsistent HDR processing and high levels of image noise. These are exactly the sort of problems firmware tweaks should be able to address, indeed Dxomark did notice a small improvement in noise performance after installing a previous update. However, it remains to be seen what real-world improvements Samsung has made this time around.

It’s good to see Samsung making continual camera improvements, but it wouldn’t hurt to see these issues ironed out before a phone is released rather than after all the camera reviews are out.

Samsung overtakes Apple in smartphone shipments as Xiaomi closes in - Reuters

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) reclaimed its crown as the world's biggest smartphone maker from Apple (AAPL.O) in the first quarter, cornering a fifth of overall global shipments.

China's Xiaomi Corp (1810.HK) rounded out the top three positions with its best quarterly performance ever as shipments surged 62% to 49 million phones and its market share rose to 14%, market research firm Canalys said.

Overall, global shipments surged 27% to 347 million units in the first quarter as the Chinese economy opened up after the pandemic and a swift vaccine rollout in the United States raised hopes of an economic recovery.

South Korea's Samsung shipped 76.5 million smartphones in the quarter to grab a 22% share of the market, Canalys said. The company on Thursday reported a 66% surge in quarterly profit in its mobiles business, thanks to robust sales of its flagship Galaxy S21 smartphone series. read more

Canalys said Apple shipped 52.4 million iPhones in the January-March period, falling to the second spot with a 15% share of the market. read more

Apple still grabbed record market share in the United States, China, India and Japan, Counterpoint analyst Varun Mishra said, adding that the iPhone Pro Max was a top seller in the United States.

Smartphone sales have surged over the past year as people stayed and worked from home. But the shopping frenzy has fuelled a global shortage in semiconductor chips that has roiled industries including autos and large appliances.

"Supply of critical components, such as chipsets, has quickly become a major concern, and will hinder smartphone shipments in the coming quarters," Canalys analyst Ben Stanton said.

Apple said on Wednesday that the chip shortage could cost the company $3 billion to $4 billion in revenue in the April-June quarter, affecting primarily iPads and Macbooks.

March-quarter smartphone shipments for China's Oppo and Vivo brands also surged, Canalys said. But Huawei, the former No. 1 that remains shackled by U.S. sanctions, took only seventh place after selling its Honor brand last year. read more

Samsung reports profit jump on smartphone, TV sales - The Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung Electronics said Thursday its operating profit for the last quarter jumped 46% from a year earlier driven by increased sales of smartphones and televisions as its business continues to flourish amid the pandemic.

The South Korean tech giant also said its quarterly revenue of 65.39 trillion won ($59 billion) was its highest for the first three months of the year.

The company’s operating profit of 9.38 trillion won ($8.5 billion) would have been higher it not for an underperforming semiconductor business, which was impacted by a storm-related shutdown at its chip plant in Austin in February and declining prices of NAND memory chips.

Samsung said it expects its chip business to rebound in the current quarter, driven by stronger demands in servers and a resumption of full operations at its Austin plant. However, the company expects its profit from mobile devices to decline during the period due to supply shortages of some components and slowing sales of its flagship smartphones.

Samsung said its TV business could possibly benefit from major sporting events, such as the UEFA Euro 2020 soccer tournament and the Tokyo Summer Olympics, but that the continued spread of COVID-19 and lockdowns were creating uncertainties.

The company said global demand for its TVs could slow in the second half of the year, due to a “switch of demand from home entertainment to outdoor activities as more countries reach herd immunity” as their populations are vaccinated.

“For the second half, market conditions (are) expected to improve for the component business with the company continuing to extend product and technology leadership,” Samsung said in a statement. “However, global macroeconomic risks, including uncertainties over demand related to COVID-19, are likely to persist.”

Samsung is coming off a robust business year, with its dual strength in parts and finished products allowing it to benefit from the pandemic and the prolonged trade war between United States and China.

Samsung’s semiconductor business benefited by increased demand for PCs and servers as virus outbreaks forced millions of people to stay and work at home. U.S. sanctions against China’s Huawei Technologies have meanwhile hindered one of Samsung’s biggest rivals in smartphones, components and equipment.

Samsung has shown no obvious sign of trouble related to the imprisonment of its vice chairman and de facto chief, Lee Jae-yong. He is serving a 2 1/2-year sentence for bribing then-President Park Geun-hye and her close confidante to win government support for a 2015 merger between two Samsung affiliates.

The deal helped strengthen Lee’s control over the Samsung group, but the revelations about his corrupt ties with the Park government fueled a 2016 corruption scandal that spurred huge protests and ousted Park from office.

But some politicians, religious and business leaders have been calling for President Moon Jae-in to pardon Lee. They say it would help Lee strengthen Samsung’s leadership in semiconductors and he could possibly use his business reach to help the country secure more coronavirus vaccines.

On Wednesday, the Lee family said it will donate tens of thousands of rare artworks, including Picassos and Dalis, and give hundreds of millions of dollars to health care while unveiling a multiyear plan to pay an $11 billion inheritance tax bill following last year’s death of Lee’s father and company chairman, Lee Kun-Hee.

Raising cash for the tax payment is crucial for the Lee family to extend its control over Samsung’s business empire, and some analysts say the process could possibly result in a shakeup across the group.
