Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Users Complain As Security Updates Fail - Forbes

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G users are complaining the August 1 security update won't install. I know, I'm one of them.

Most readers will know that I have something of a love-hate relationship with Samsung. I love the Android smartphone supremo when things are going right, but oh boy, can it suck when things go wrong. One particular bugbear of mine, as a security person, is the fractured Android ecosystem and the impact that can have on the distribution of monthly security updates. Of late, Samsung has done pretty well with getting these out to most users towards the front end of each month, and even sometimes the end of the month before. This month, something has gone very wrong it would seem. Let me explain.

The August firmware update arrived with me today, Saturday, August 8, for my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. As always, I immediately hit the install now button and carried on working while my smartphone was made safe from whatever nasties had been neutralized this month. Or, at least, that was the theory. When I happened to glance at my handset after a few minutes, instead of the usual updating process, I was met with an error message: "Failed to update software - Failed to update firmware. Visit a Samsung service center."

I repeated the process and got the same result each time, with the security update downloading OK but failing at precisely 26% during installation.

A quick Google search revealed that some terminal illness had not hit my Note 10+ 5G, but rather that others were experiencing the same issue. The Samsung EU community forums, for example, include several users complaining of the same thing.

I next jumped onto Twitter where, surprise surprise, more reports of the same issue. The common link appears to be the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. Not the kind of Samsung Experience I was looking for when I purchased from the very top of the 2019 flagship range. And not good news for anyone who cares about the security of their device either.

I am waiting to hear back from both Samsung's media communications people, who I have approached for comment, and the Samsung UK account on Twitter, who I sent a direct message asking for advice regarding this problem. When I hear back from either, I will, of course, update this story.

Meanwhile, if you are also having this problem do please let me know on Twitter. It looks like this is only impacting Note 10+ 5G users right now, but I'd like to hear if other handset users are also unable to install the security update.
